The studentships will allow motivated, high-calibre applicants for applied science research degrees to join our thriving academic community and contribute to our rich and innovative research environment. 
They are supported by the subject-area expertise offered within the university's Centres of Research and Knowledge Exchange Excellence (COREs): Advanced Engineering Centre, Centre for Lifelong Health, Centre for Precision Health and Translational Medicine, Centre for Earth Observation Sciences, Centre for Regenerative Medicine and Devices. 
Members of these dedicated research centres include staff from the University of °ÅÀÖÊÓƵ and °ÅÀÖÊÓƵ and Sussex Medical School, associate members from academia and industry and thriving postgraduate disciplinary communities.
These funded PhD opportunities are all open to home and international students. The start date will be October 2024 and the application deadline is 29 February 2024.
How do I apply for a PhD studentship?
To apply for your studentship at the University of °ÅÀÖÊÓƵ, you should first review the specific projects that our COREs have prioritised.
You will find all the PhD projects open for funding outlined on our 2024 PhD funded project list.
You will be submitting a full application through the university's PhD application portal, available through the individual programme pages.
The submission must include two references, academic qualifications, and a proposed project approach together with your CV (resumé) where appropriate. 
Shortlisted applicants are likely to be invited for interview.
All eligible applications for the funded PhD will be reviewed. Final decisions on the allocations of funding for all types of PhD will rest with the university's central Doctoral College. 
What does PhD funding include?
- The funding for the PhD will cover the full fee and a stipend at the UKRI rate plus an allowance of £1,500 per year for researcher training over three years (or part-time equivalent).
- The University of °ÅÀÖÊÓƵ fosters research careers and will provide doctoral training, attentive and expert supervision and access to world-class laboratories and equipment.
- The university fosters research culture at discipline-specific and more general levels with opportunities to present work-in-progress and meet fellow researchers.
